Why Data Is Becoming the New Tool of Modern Farmers

For generations, farmers have relied on experience, observation, and local knowledge to make decisions about planting, irrigation, fertilization, and harvesting. While these skills remain invaluable, modern agriculture increasingly depends on another resource: data.

Today, information is becoming one of the most important tools available to farmers. Through technologies such as sensors, satellites, drones, GPS systems, and farm management software, agricultural professionals can collect and analyse large amounts of data about their fields, crops, and farming operations.

Data-driven agriculture allows farmers to make more informed decisions. Instead of relying solely on estimates, they can monitor soil conditions, track crop growth, identify potential problems early, and optimise the use of water, fertilizers, and other resources. This helps improve productivity while reducing costs and environmental impact.

The growing importance of data is closely connected to the development of Precision Agriculture. This makes agricultural practices more efficient and targeted.

The ReGrow project supports the development of these modern competencies through the creation of a new MSc programme in Precision Agriculture and Digital Farming. Students will learn not only how to use agricultural technologies, but also how to interpret data and transform information into practical solutions.

Data also plays an important role in sustainability. Better information helps farmers reduce waste, improve resource management, and respond more effectively to environmental challenges. As climate conditions become increasingly unpredictable, access to reliable data can support better planning and greater resilience.
