From University to Farm: Why Partnerships Matter in Agricultural Education

Modern agricultural education cannot succeed in isolation. Universities play a crucial role in providing knowledge and research, but to prepare students for the realities of the agricultural sector, they must work closely with farmers, businesses, industry experts, and public institutions.

This is one of the key ideas behind the ReGrow project: building strong partnerships between education and practice.

Too often, graduates leave university with theoretical knowledge but little understanding of how agriculture works in real life. Employers may find that young professionals lack practical skills, experience with modern technologies, or an understanding of current labor market needs. ReGrow addresses this challenge by developing its MSc in Precision Agriculture together with universities, businesses, agricultural professionals, and other stakeholders. The programme is designed in close cooperation with industry and aligned with labor market needs in Georgia and Ukraine.

These partnerships bring many benefits. Businesses and farmers can help identify the skills that future professionals will need. Universities can adapt their curricula to reflect these realities. Students benefit from internships, practical training, and direct contact with employers.

Within ReGrow, this cooperation takes many forms. Agricultural enterprises, extension services, and industry representatives contribute to the design of courses and learning materials. Students will have opportunities to participate in internships and practical activities where they can apply what they have learned in real agricultural settings. The project also promotes stronger collaboration between universities in Georgia, Ukraine, Greece, and Germany, creating an international network of knowledge and experience.

Partnerships also help ensure that education remains relevant over time. Agriculture is changing quickly, and educational programmes must evolve with it. By maintaining close connections between universities and the agricultural sector, ReGrow can continue to respond to new technologies, environmental challenges, and economic needs.

When universities and farms work together, everyone benefits. Students become more prepared, businesses gain skilled professionals, and the agricultural sector becomes stronger, more innovative, and better equipped for the future.
